System Engineer

As a system engineer, you'll have responsibility for setting up, developing and maintaining  system infrastructure (compute, storage, hypervisor, data backup and restore) within for the clients. You will also involve in designing and carry out proof of concept, field testing, integration and other activities to support clients activities.

Your aim is to ensure the integrity of high availability system infrastructure to provide maximum performance for the clients.

You may work internally as part of an organisation's IT support team, or externally as part of an outsourced IT networking consultancy firm working with a number of clients.

Networks can include:

  • Physical (servers, storage) & software defined (Virtualization)

  • Operating system (Linux, Microsoft) and system management

  • Data protection software (backup software, high availability and data replication software)

 

Responsibilities

As a system engineer, your responsibility include:

  • Establish the system (server, storage, virtualization and relates software) environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation and defining, documenting and enforcing system standards

  • Design and implement new solutions with high availability and improve resilience of the client environment

  • Design and plan physical and virtual resources (compute, storage, backup capacity)

  • Design and deploy data backup and retore policy, test and fine tune the restore process

  • Maximise system performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting system problems and outages, scheduling upgrades and collaborating with application/database or clients team on system optimisation

  • Migrate physical system, virtual resources to new or other platform

  • Undertake data system fault investigations for physical and virtual, SAN and iSCSA environment.

  • Secure system and host access by establishing and enforcing policies, hardening and defining and monitoring access

  • Perform disaster recovery procedure with clients

  • Report system operational status by gathering and prioritising information and managing projects

  • Upgrade system equipment to the latest stable firmware releases

  • Provide remote support to on-site engineers and end users/clients during installation

  • provide remote troubleshooting and fault finding if issues occur upon initial installation

  • Provide 2 and 3 level support to customers

  • liaise with project management teams, third-line engineers and service desk engineers on a regular basis

  • speak to customers via email and phone for initial requirement capture.

 

Working hours

  • You'll typically work a standard week. However, you may be on call outside office hours, at weekends or in the evenings, public holiday and need to be flexible in case of major technical problems or performing network migration.

 

Job requirements

  • an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of company business and industry needs, as well as the technical demands

  • excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate with staff who aren't technically trained

  • organisational skills and the ability to prioritise your workload.

  • Minimum professional certification as below:

    • Certified in delivering HPE system (DL, Simplivity, storage) or equivalent products in DELL or equivalent

    • 3 years working experiences on enterprise server (HPE DL/ML Series, Blade, Huawei FusionServer, DELL etc) , storage (HPE 3PAR, MSA, Primera and etc), virtualization (VMware, Fusion Compute and others) and backup software (Veeam, Cohesity, HPE data protector)

    • Linux / Microsoft certification
